"We gotten so much feedback on the song.. never thought it would have received so much commentary," Jennings told Black Voices. "I don't feel like it's a controversial song. It's common sense. It's nothing new in there.
In many ways, Jennings is right -- black women have known for some time that there is unquestionably an unbalanced ratio of marriage-ready black men for every black woman, but when you actually add up the numbers, the dating scene appears even more dismal for women.
Lyfe does admits that his percentages may be a bit off, due to the fact the numbers come from a sampled group but said, "When I say only 10 percent is worth having, I mean specifically to you, because we are all going to want different things."
I decided to do a little digging on my own to see how Lyfe's stats match up with other studies. It might just surprise you.
Cheaters
Lyfe says: 25 percent
Actually: According to a study done by Ebony Magazine in 1998, experts estimate that nearly 75 percent of Black married men, or men involved in serious relationships, cheat. That means three men out of every four practice infidelity, if the numbers are to be believed with Black men cheating the most out of any racial group.
Unstable
Lyfe says: 25 percent
Actually: According to a study done by the Kaiser Family Foundation in 2005, men aged 18-29 there were 19.5 percent unemployed black men, 7.5 percent who graduated from college, and 10.1 percent in prison.
Liars
Lyfe says: 30 percent
Actually: 99.9 percent. If a man, or people for that matter say they never lied, they just did.
Gay
Lyfe says: 10 percent
Actually: While the released report from the Centers for Disease Control's National Center (CDC) for Health Statistics reveals that only 2.3 percent of the population considers themselves homosexual, the number of Black men specifically is hard to gauge. This is because the definition of what is "gay" within the Black community is not as clearly defined, as well as their is still very low acceptance for gays to have Black men willfully admit their orientation.
Emotionally Insecure
Lyfe says: 15 percent
Actually: The Black Mental Health Alliance for Education and Consultation, Inc. says 7 percent of African American men will develop depression during their lifetime due to self esteem issues. Among African Americans males, the possibility of "being someone", making a significant contribution to society, and attaining basic respect and self esteem is seldom a reality, predisposing them to suicidal and homicidal acts of destruction.
Dont Practice Safe Sex
Lyfe says: 15 percent
Actually: Hard to tell how many Black men are having sex without condoms, but not wearing condoms can leave men with diseases. According to the CDC Black men with syphillis in 2004 increased by 22.6 percent, the rate of AIDS diagnoses for black men was almost eight times the rate for white men, the prevalence of gential herpes simplex virus type 2 is 35 percent in black men, and in general chlamydia has increased by 43 percent.
Fatherless Men
Lyfe says: 20 percent
Actually: According to Newsweek.com the percentage of black children living in fatherless homes is roughly 50 percent.

What kind of man hating bullsh*t is this. From the looks of him Lyfe Jennings ought to be part of those statistics females should not lower their standards for. All Steve Harvey and this clown Lyfe Jennings are doing is capitalizing on selling black male bashing and victimization to weak azz black women who are no better than the men they criticize. Where are the pathetic statistics of worthless black women at??? All this type of article does is attempt to pit black women and men against each other.

Eventhough I like what he did with the song, once again people are so caught up in the problems and not the answers to those problems. I could go on and on about women and use OLD stats to back up my opinions, but I won't. I have other things to do like educate those who will actually listen. But if you see Lyfe, tell him I'm only a messenger, I'm only a messenger!!!!!

I kind of agree with David1. Those gentlemen are deffinately capitalizing off the stereo types of black men. This is also disheartening to black women because it makes us feel that we'll never find the one who is "marriage maaterial" and as the commenter above said, turns us against eachother on who has the best man etc. I really like the song and it does have a positve note to it, but under the surface, it may be causing young black women to question themselves.

I saw him perform the song the other day and I like it. It is heavy. I think people should take away from it what they choose. Sometimes stuff like this is hard to digest. I don't believe that it is a black man bashing song but there are some problems in our community. I am not looking at or Lyfe Jennings to do anything for me, but I do like the song and keep it in perspective.

I get more and more amazed about stories like this. I get more and more frustrated with stories like this because I see men from other ethnicities get away with more stuff then brothas, but we brothas continue to get called out by the media and others. Why? The actor, Charlie Sheen, is battling the state of Colorado not to give him a felony conviction and jail time for spousal abuse, yet we still talk about Chris Brown. Has everyone forgotten that Farrah Fawcett second husband beat the whiteness out of her? Yet,everyone still talks about Ike and Tina & Rihanna and Chris. I dont get it, it seems so easy to use black folks as the standard of what is wrong instead of what is right. Country singer Mindy McCready's ex-husband also physically abused her damn near killing her, yet again, we continue to talk about Ike and Tina, Rihanna and Chris. I dont get it!

I strongly believe this song was written to target young women..emphasis on young. There is such an epidemic going on in the music industry right now with regards to sex! That's all these young people are subjected to! This song is a dose of reality for these young girls with no direction. Looking to the blogs to see celebrities sexed up and used up. As for this "article" flawed...seriously jacked. The song NEVER once singled out BLACK men. Lyfe said ALL men...ALL. Don't be insecure black men. If you are a REAL man it doesn't apply to you. Unfortunately, we do have deeply rooted problems within the black community that stem from decades of oppression. We need to come together and build each other up but I digress.

L...I love your comment...Right on...take this song with a grain a salt...I love it. Lyfe never claimed to be the "GOSPEL TRUTH"...Nothing is wrong with making young women think....with the prevelance of SEX on every song...Lets have women think about their worth a little bit...nothing is wrong with that ...

I find it fascinating the people who are perpetual losers that regard themselves as invaluable sages w/r to other people's issues but some how never seem to get their own acts together. Isn't this the same Lyfe Jennings who had a restraining order place against him for doing just about everything he preaches against in his songs? While we are at it how about that douche-bag Steve Harvey who screwed up 3 marriages but has the audacity to tell you what you need to know as a woman to get a man?
