The Blogging Bride: Bachelorette Party Alternatives

Comments (5)

My bachelorette party is months away, but my girls and I can't stop brainstorming possible locations for my "last hurrah" bash. There's Las Vegas, of course. Miami has been thrown into the mix. And in a moment of extreme financial optimism (or delusion), we have even considered Rio de Janeiro. But let's be serious. The economy is wack, no one is trying to spend money on a lavish vacation and chances are my maids and I will be celebrating my last days as an unmarried woman in New York, where I live. That's no reason to despair, though. There are plenty of options in New York, just like there are plenty of options for a fun and unique bachelorette party in your hometown. I've done some research, and here are a few ideas if you're planning on staying close to home for your bachelorette bash.

1. Let the party come to you: By "party," I am not referring to a corny male wearing a policeman's uniform modified with booty shorts and toting a circa-1989 boom box (but if that's your thing, I'm not knocking it). If you're looking for something a little less expected than a stripper, research nail technicians, hair stylists or makeup artists who might come to your house to beautify you and your friends before a night on the town. What about a Minx nails party? Several experts who specialize in applying these crazy-popular adhesive nail coverings make housecalls. Check MinxNails.com for more info.

2. Ditch the bars and clubs for a spa: The local hot club seems like an obvious choice, but chances are you've already been there. How about trying something new? Lots of spas offer group options and some, like Brooklyn's Body by Brooklyn Spa and Lounge, have actual lounge areas and offer refreshments. If you're in the area and are considering planning an event at Body by Brooklyn, try the chocolate massage. It's decadent and would be a delightful treat for you and your friends.

3. Try a little continuing education: Learning never stops, guys. Social networking company Moxie in the City, which holds events in nine major cities from coast to coast, also offers fun (and definitely not for the conservative) private classes, like strip tease, pole dancing and an interesting array of very specific sex-ed classes. You and the rest of your party can buy out a whole class for your event. Don't worry, drinks are offered to loosen up some of your more reserved girlfriends.

4. Go on a close-to-home girls' getaway: Going on a trip doesn't necessarily mean you have to shell out for airfare. Research some of the offerings in your region. Are you driving distance from the beach? Casinos? Mountains? A lake? If so, check out some nice bed and breakfasts, vacation rentals or hotels where you and the ladies can stay for a nice, relaxing getaway that doesn't have to break the bank.
