Tiffany Rose is a brownbaby. What does that mean exactly? It's a term Rose uses to describe a person of mixed race heritage. Coincidentally, it's also the name of her website: brownbaby.org.
"I recently created brownbaby.org largely to facilitate and drive questions about race. I have the unique opportunity to view the world through multiple eyes," says Rose. "In my view, who better to begin conversations about how we view race than those of us who are racially undefined?"
With the election of Barack Obama, the Oscar win by Halle Berry, the golf prowess of Tiger Woods and the chart topping success of Mariah Carey, biracial and multiracial people are rising in prominence in society and becoming more widely accepted. It's the rapidly changing attitude of Americans toward people with varied cultural backgrounds that inspires Rose's vision. While Rose takes special pride in her mixed heritage, she concedes that being a "brownbaby" has not always been easy.
Rose says the term brownbaby comes from a painful episode from her childhood. She was about six years old, in front of her first grade class, when the moniker first reared its head. "I was trying to explain what I was, so I pulled out crayons to show kids what I was. I mixed black and white and got gray," said Rose. She knew that wasn't right so asked her mother for help.
"My mom showed me brown and called me her brown baby girl. That was a way for me to identify my race and when I used it with the other kids they got it.

Rose, like many other biracial children, feels she's always gone between the worlds, almost being forced to embrace a life where she didn't quite fit in anywhere. She was once left out of a classmate's birthday party in fifth grade because she was black. If that wasn't bad enough, she says her mom used to select both white and black for her ethnicity until the school made her choose just one race.
Rose admits that when she was younger it was a strange existence; going back and forth between two worlds. It was a life where she felt she was always being made to think one race was worse or better than the other; never quite knowing where she belonged.
She says she wondered "Who should I be loyal to? I was always afraid of being too white or too black. Some of my black family members were constantly pointing out my "strange" behavior or what they thought were white characteristics, making my mother seem inferior somehow."
Despite the push and pull between the two drastically different cultures, Rose claims she learned how to adapt; to become whoever she needed to be to make her life easier. She taught herself to walk a fine line between both races and ultimately finding peace with her diverse background.
Still, her lifelong struggle with her identity fueled brownbaby.org and her desire to educate people about biracial individuals.
"Brownbaby.org is about awareness. It's also about empowering people to know who they are and not necessarily letting their race define them. In the end, it's all about the conversation. No change can happen without dialogue," said Rose.

Cheryl, i think what ur missing is she isn't saying she was the first brownbaby EVER in the history. Mixing has been going on for centuries! what she's saying is its time for a new discussion...she cleeeeeearly says brownbaby.org is about not letting race define you....just read the article. The whole idea is to get away from this conceptualized notion that your race and skin tone determine what and who you are....this is not about a history lesson because we're not dealing with past ideologies here...we're talking about what can be done now to move away from this resentment over race and accepting ourselves as INDIVIDUALS sister. Go to the site...its brownbaby.org....just open your mind

The catagories: Easier,Harder, Depends, Not Sure, as the answers to what do you think about biracial children having it easier or harder, indicate a gap in the thinking of the author of this discussion.
I looked at that and had an immediate response of:
Neither.

What I don't understand from everyone who is of the GET OVER IT school of thought is this : Are you telling me that there is nothing in your past that has caused you pain or still haunts you? Then why is it so difficult for you to let Tiffany and everyone else with similar (painful for them)experiences deal with whatever emotions they cause? Pain is painful because its personal.

Biracial kids grow up to be just as full as crap as their parents were who lied about their real reasons for hooking up in the first place. Biracial people try to take the easy road for stating they are black one minute for conviences and white the next for conviences.
I'm not saying all biracial people are like this, but most are.
later!

Black women have been confused since Day One when the snake fooled eve. The devil has always competed with God so after Adam the devil inticed eve with the white man. All Brown People are mixed with the devil's blood. That means Asia, Pala, Ven, Hisp, Mexi,Cuba, Carriabean, Etc. All Women of color have to be strong and really have fatih in Jesus Christ Because they have been working with the Devil since day one trying to destroy God's People. When women of color date Black Man they want to scream, yell, hate, fight, call Police anything to destroy the black man. When women of color date white man whatever he say,do,go,feel, want, stay, etc. no questions asked. That makes them honest, loving and Faithful. Let's try giving everyone a chance. While they dont know who they are, woman of color start Hating who they really are there race becomes various or perfer not to say, Etc. Black Boy's grow to be men between the age of 25-30 White Boys are Evil from 0-100 But God has sent Jesus to save us all. Not just Women, Anybody who feel they want to live the white way, think they have to hate people who looks llike them. Instead of teaching the white man not to live the way the devil wants them too. Lets support our president the Messiah Barack Obama.

It is 2009 and we have truly come very far as a people. I truly don't think nobody but blacks are thinking this hard about biracial people. I have tons of biracial friends, and I don't hear anything about how hard their life is, etc... absolutely nothing. I think we are making a bigger deal out of it than need be. There's been biracial people around forever. How they deal with their situation is up to them. Its all relative. To each his own.... And to Kevin, you need to re-read the Bible. Obama is not the Messiah. You sound crazy. He could be the antichrist for all we know. Hell, he popped up out of nowhere, no one knew who he was.... he's young, charismatic.. I'm just sayin'. You need to get out and educate yourself more instead of just relying and putting you faith in someone's race and his "unknown" yet to be seen politics.
