The domestic violence saga between young pop stars Chris Brown and Rihanna has not only caused an uproar among fans and gossip junkies -- many celebrities are weighing in as well. The sordid story inspired Oprah Winfrey and Tyra Banks to dedicate entire episodes of their talk shows to domestic violence. Actress Robin Givens, who went through a very public struggle with spousal abuse during her marriage to former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson and is now a spokesperson for the National Domestic Violence Hotline, went on 'Larry King Live' to talk about the often-deadly cycle of abuse that plagues so many women.
"I've spoken to women every[where]," she told guest host Joy Behar. "Peoria, El Paso. ... And what's amazing is that I find that my story is their story; their story is my story -- down to the details. He dragged me down the hall by my hair. He pulled me out of bed by my panties. He would like to choke me. He would kick."
Domestic Violence Myths Exposed
Myth: Women are the only victims of domestic violence.

Fact: Although women make up the majority of victims of domestic violence, men are not to be excluded. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics Crime Data Brief, men account for approximately 15% of the victims of reported abuse by an intimate partner. Men often fail to report the abuse because they fear no one will believe them or take them seriously. Children are also victims. In a national survey, 50 percent of the men who frequently assaulted their wives also frequently abused their children.

Myth: Domestic violence happens only in poor, uneducated, minority households.
jupiterimages
Fact: There is no "typical victim" of domestic violence. It happens in ALL families and relationships. Regardless of age, class, religion, marital status or gender, anyone can be a victim of domestic violence. However, some statistics show that "minority" communities have higher rates of domestic violence. Approximately one in four women are victims of abuse.

Myth: Domestic violence is only physical abuse.

Fact: Domestic violence can come in the form of physical, emotional, psychological, and/or sexual abuse. According to Verbalabuse.com, name-calling is abusive because it says that you are BLANK, instead of a person. Batterers define their mates as objects. It isn't healthy to be in the same room with a person who defines you, and it is harmful to children who witness it. Physical abuse often begins with and is accompanied by verbal battering.

Myth: If a woman doesn't leave, it must not be so bad.
Corbis
Fact: Leaving an abusive relationship is easier said than done. Women stay in abusive relationships for many reasons. The victim may:
-Be afraid of what the abuser may do if he finds out
-Have financial dependency on the abuser
-Be in love with the abuser
-Believe the abuse is her fault
-Have no other place to live
-Stay for the 'sake of the children'; the idea being that two parents are better than one.

Myth: Women who are abused often provoke it.
Fact: Abuse is often learned -- more than half of children who witness abuse will go on to be abusers -- and an abuser chooses to abuse. No one deserves to be abused and the abuser is the only one to blame.
That Rihanna seems to have reunited with alleged abuser Brown, who has been charged with felony counts of battery and making criminal threats in connection with the Feb. 8 incident, is not uncommon, Givens explained on the show. She said that Tyson hit her for the first time before they married, but she believed him when he said he loved her and wouldn't do it again.
On her show, Winfrey also referred to Rihanna and Brown's rumored coupledom, warning, "If a man hits you once, he will hit you again. He will hit you again."
But no matter how many celebrities and commentators weigh in on what Rihanna and Brown should do, the couple will ultimately come to a decision about their relationship on their own.
"The one thing I'd like to say to Rihanna, actually, as difficult as this all is, she does not have to answer to the media," Givens said. "She doesn't have to explain it. She has to take care of herself."

First let me say that don't promote violence, but I do condone self defense, if a wommen thinks she is bad enough to hit on a man attack him and think that she's not supposed to be hit back, SHAME on her. I'm sick of women getting away with and people saying that becuase he is a man he should hit. I'm a forty year old women who grew up with nothing but boys and I give a hit just as good as i get.

The problem with all the comments about Chris and Rihanna is nobody actually knows the truth,- it's all speculation. The only thing we know is
Rihanna got beat. Remember these are two multiplatinum artist involved and
because they're worth a lot of money there is some damage control being done by publicists,-therefore we don't know what to believe. For example -initially Rihanna supposedly had given Chris an STD,- also Chris originally had read text messages between Rihanna and an anonymous person discussing a previous sexual laison. -You could see how this could be a public reltions nightmare if the truth came out,- it's a lose -lose scenario if you're a record company excec. So now they get married and fix it. - I think she was a little too much woman for the young boy and she turned him out! - Only a jealous man in love would react the way Chris did.

I am just sorry that the public is taking this whole thing to the extreme, not to dismiss the wrong that was done by both parties, but the public is making more of it then the two of them are, sure it is disappointing and upsetting to the fans, and family, but it's hurting them more. They both made mistakes, big ones, but instead of downing the two,and making them feel that all hope is lost, let's let them know that the public still cares about them, and hope and pray that they get the help, that we all know that they clearly need. There have been so many other that have done so much more, and have gone on and receives awards, wrote books, and made movies. Our young,as well as anyone else, when we do wrong,we pay for the wrong,in most cases,we get help for the wrong,we correct the wrong, and then we move on from the wrong. We've talked about it,expressed how we feel, and now it's time to let the healing began.

Lord of Mercy!
I was wondering where all the decent, sane brothas are repudiating Chis. After hearing these comments, may be it's is a great idea they shut the h@ll up! This is a d@mn shame! Robin Given a 110lb woman can fight a heavy weight champion? You guys are d@mn fools.
I thought some of the crap I read about black men are just racist crap from white folks, it turns out they are up to something! Where has this black woman been? I think I'm gonna marry a white man. There is a very slim chance he'll hit me, & if he did, he will have the good sense to hide it & not flaunt his barbarism & ruffianism on a blog.
What a f@cking shame!
Sir Topham Hat, I pray for the sake of my father that you are not a black man!

No one has the right to put there hands on anyone no matter who it is. The best thing a person can do is remove themselves from the situation and call the cops immediately whether be man or woman. Everybody saids it a double standard against men but men need to realize they can call the cops too that option has not been take away from them.

Let's take the star element out of this equation and understand that No real man should EVER hit a woman. I grew up with a strong father and 4 brothers. Not only were they not allowed to hit my sister and I but my sister and I were not permitted to provoke them either. OK, I was socialized to be civil butI know from being around men all my life that men have a high tolerance for womens' attitudes. We, (women) often times take advantage of a man's natural level of tolerance. Men are generally easy unless they were abused too ,then we have a deeper problem. We must exercise a conscious effort to communicate, even when angry. If you can't talk it out, then somebody needs to walk it out. We should not leave Oprah as our communication warrior and voice for all issues because many times her opinions are not acurate. SHe's human, CB is human , even Mike Tyson in his cannibilistic state is human. Pray people. Bless us all .

I'm getting a little sick of this comment that no man should hit a woman no matter the provocation. Bulls**t! But I've got one for you; No woman should disrespect a man no matter how she feels! Keep your mouth shut and your hands to yourself! You have no excuse for violating either of these rules!
